Maffeis executed the detail design for the two double swing bridges at El Ferdan, Ismailia.
The project consists in the retrofitting and upgrading of the existing bridge from one to double rail lane, and in the design of a new bridge, with the similar geometries of the existing one, with a double rail lane. The design included the bridge’s mechanical rotation and its locking system through electrical motors and hydraulic pistons.
The total length of the bridge is 640 m (2100 ft), and the interaxis between the central piers is 340 m (1115 ft). After the final expansion of the Suez Canal, the allowed navigable channel will be 316 m (1035 ft) which corresponds to the distance between the new permanent protection jetties.
The height of the bridge increases gradually from 15 m (49 ft) at the middle span to 60 m (195 ft) over the abutments. The transverse interaxis between the main lattice trusses is equal to 11,4 m (40 ft). The lower deck has the same width which is locally enlarged to 15,8 m (50 ft) over the central piers in order to accommodate the bearings over the rim girder.
